“Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble”! This is the episode we’ve been waiting for, the Halloween decorating reveal and contest!
We’ve worked hard, spent way to much money and tweaked until the very end. All for this moment. If I had to vote, I’d say my sister definitely hit a home run with her “Monster House” theme. Her lighting is just so on point. Who would think that red and green would actually work for Halloween? It’s so frightfully unexpected and the addition of the monster fangs at her entryway this year is just perfection. If you’re interested in using this theme, you’ll need some green up-lighting (found at any Halloween store) and a few strings of red mini-lights to lay on the inside base of your windows. You’ll also need to find the DIY fangs on Pinterest. The projection has definitely been a touchy subject this year because I was totally prepared to purchase one of my own (she found hers on Ebay). However, my sister really likes that it sets her house apart, so I guess I’ll let her have it! After all, I am the older sister. It really does add to the “spook-factor” and makes it look like a haunted house. I just love it! The skeletons climbing the house are super creepy because the fact that they are pose-able makes them look real. Home Depot was the best deal on pose-able skeletons but Rite-aid is 50% off right now. The new addition of her spooky tree (amongst her stellar landscaping) and arch of skeletons at her side entryway from Home Depot really hit the mark as well. I also love that super-tall glowing ghost inflatable (Home Depot and Ace). The height makes it quite a presence when you’re standing beneath it. My sister really is the ultimate Scream Queen! Bravo sis!
As for my “Dracula’s Castle” theme, I like to think I gave her a run for her money. At least I kept her on her toes. My lighting consists of purple uplighting, green uplighting in my window boxes and orange-mini lights at the base of each window. I also added some zombie hands (purchased on-line) which we also painted the finger nails with black sharpie to look like Dracula. I used purple mini-lights draped at my entryway with creepy cloth (found on-line) and columns with gargoyles to give it that “creepy castle” feel. I also added some weird-looking pumpkins, lanterns and branches for a grand yet spooky entrance! I may not have a projector but I added some DIY (and animatronic) werewolves and vampires, as well as some “scary butlers” at my side entry door for a little extra something. I found the mini-werewolf at my front door at Home depot and the “Universal” Count Dracula on-line along with the columns and gargoyles. The howler skeleton in my top window box was found at Home Depot and the tall werewolf against my house was a DIY project. I took Kaden’s Halloween costume from last year, along with some old clothes from my closet and dressed a “non-working” animatronic. Some Dracula window clings found on-line also added a little extra something special. Since my yard is wider rather than long, like my sisters, I always add some displays to tie my garage in to my house. I added a cemetery with some cheap skeletons found at just about any store along with a fence from Rite-aid, a skeleton bonfire with orange mini-lights to depict fire and a “master with his witches” display at my garage with fire and ice uplighting (for the fire at that display). All of the monsters, spiders and witches cauldrons found throughout the displays on my back porch and yard may be purchased at Party city.
We hope you enjoy this episode and gain a little inspiration to make your house spook-tacular too! You’d be surprised what a few strings of mini-lights and some uplighting can do to your home. We’d love to see your creations so post your photos! Have fun with this spooky holiday season and have a Happy Halloween!! Oh and don’t forget to vote for your fave house! Don’t worry, the loser won’t toilet paper your house or will I??
Love,
Kim & Nikki
xoxo
